Monster Dance Party is a 1964 novelty rock LP by Don Hinson and The Rigamorticians, produced by Gary Paxton—the same mad genius behind “Monster Mash.” Originally released on Capitol Records, the album sits squarely in the golden age of Halloween-themed pop, blending surf rock, rhythm and blues, and tongue-in-cheek horror humor. Hinson, a Las Vegas radio DJ, delivers theatrical vocals and deadpan monster impressions across Paxton’s tightly arranged tracks, creating one of the genre’s most spirited cult curiosities.
The album’s highlights include the jittery groove of “Monster Surf Stomp,” the werewolf twist-up “Werewolf Watusi,” and the darkly comic “That Little Old Graverobber Me.” A reworked version of “Monster Mash” also appears here in a looser, more R&B-tinged form. Its best-known cut, “Riboflavin-Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood,” later achieved cult status after being covered by horror-punk outfit 45 Grave.
Once long out of print—save for a brief cassette release in the 1980s—Monster Dance Party has become a prized collectible among fans of novelty and early rock oddities. The 2025 reissue resurrects the album in fitting style, pressed on limited-edition orange and black pumpkin splatter vinyl (2,000 copies worldwide), ensuring that this ghoulish garage classic lives to haunt another generation of Halloween turntables.
