Description

Cochineal Whole Dried Bugs (Dactylopius coccus) organicAlso known as cochinilla (Spanish), grana cochinilla, carmine insect, scarlet grain. Cochineal is a legendary natural dye derived from the dried bodies of Dactylopius coccus, a scale insect cultivated on prickly pear (nopal) cacti. These insects produce carminic acid, which makes up 1922% of their body weight and yields brilliant reds, pinks, and purples. Also known as cochinilla (Spanish), grana cochinilla, carmine insect, “scarlet grain.”

Cochineal is a legendary natural dye derived from the dried bodies of Dactylopius coccus, a scale insect cultivated on prickly pear (nopal) cacti. These insects produce carminic acid, which makes up 19–22% of their body weight and yields brilliant reds, pinks, and purples.

Our cochineal comes directly from a small, sustainable farm in Peru, where it is cultivated organically on nopals and traded fairly. This ensures a consistently high carminic acid content for strong, reliable dye results, while also supporting farming families who keep this ancient tradition alive.

Did you know? Cochineal was once so valuable in colonial trade that it was second only to silver in exports from the Americas. The Aztecs and Maya used it for textiles, ritual objects, and manuscripts, and it remains one of the most lightfast natural red dyes.

Main dye compound: Carminic acid (Cochineal) (E120)
CI Natural Red 4
Part used: Whole insect
Origin: Peru, sustainable and fair-trade farm

Shading Tips

  • Wool (no mordant) → bright reds and pinks
  • Alum (protein fibers) → crimson to magenta
  • Tannin + alum (cellulose fibers) → rich bluish reds
  • Cream of tartar (acidic bath) → pushes bath toward scarlet, intensifies reds
  • Iron → deep purples, browns, and blackened reds
  • Overdye with indigo → violets and plums

My Designs? Sublime. The Paper? Sublimation Perfection.
Size: 8.5"X11"
Prints clear, presses clean, and never lets me down—unless I’m the problem (which is often). I keep this stocked like toilet paper. You don’t want to run out mid-project.

Great Quality
Size: 8.5"X11"
This A-SUB sublimation paper is a great quality. I have been using it for many years and have had absolutely no issues. I use it with an Epson 2780 inkjet printer. I have never had a jamming issue or smudging.

Happy to find a seller that carries the 120
Size: 8.5"X11"
I’ve been doing sublimation since May 2025. I have tried a variety between 105, 120 and 125. I’m not exactly sure why 120 ASub it is becoming harder to find . I absolutely love it. When I make my stainless steel tumblers, my colors pop more with 120.

Great Sublimation Paper – Perfect for Mugs
Size: 8.5"X11"
I purchased A-SUB Sublimation Paper 8.5x11 Inch 120GSM and I’m very happy with the results. The colors transfer beautifully. I used it for sublimation mugs and the print came out vibrant, sharp, and very professional-looking. No fading, no dull colors. I also tried using it for a cap, but the issue was not the paper — my cap heat press machine didn’t perform well and the transfer failed. For mugs, this paper works perfectly. Highly recommend for mug sublimation projects.
