The author insists that a sermon should be rooted in accurate exegesis, characterised by doctrinal substance, Christ-centredness and supernatural authority, as well as being clear, direct, vivid, helpful and moving. His book explains why. A closing section outlines a suggested method of sermon preparation, and there follows a tribute to Hugh D. Morgan, a preacher who exemplified the principles outlined in this book.

A preacher friend recommended this book. I'm not a full-time preacher but I teach in churches and am always keen to elevate my impact. My favorite books to read are those written after a lifetime of study on a single subject. Pastor Olyott does just that in Preaching Pure and Simple. He plainly explains what works. I suspect this book would serve even long-time preachers better than whatever they studied in seminary. Olyott emphasizes the preacher's relationship with the living Lord throughout its pages. Even when he talks mechanics (where to put your hands or aim your eyes, etc.), the heart and its motivation take center stage. This is one of those rare books that I plan to read again!
