The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake and makes the water alkaline. The large amounts of salts that have been deposited in the lake, make it three times as salty as the oceans and giving it a 10 pH balance. While all this salt has resulted in some amazing tufa columns (natural limestone deposits), it is also home to trillions of brine shrimp and millions of birds.
