Fitting and handling

Store boards flat and off the ground in a dry, ventilated space before installation, keeping them away from damp conditions which can cause the core to soften. Fix to timber studs or metal framing at no more than 600mm centres using appropriate drywall screws, or use a suitable bonding compound for dot and dab to masonry. Once fixed, fill screw heads and joints with jointing compound before applying a skim coat or finish of your choice.

What is the difference between square edge and tapered edge plasterboard?

Square edge board has flat, unrecessed edges on all four sides and is designed for use where the full surface will receive a skim coat of finish plaster. Tapered edge board has recessed long edges so that jointing tape and compound can be feathered flush for a seamless, paint-ready surface without full skimming.

Can 12.5mm plasterboard be used on ceilings?

Yes. 12.5mm is a standard thickness for ceilings where joist centres are at 400mm or 600mm. For spans beyond 600mm or where additional acoustic or fire performance is needed, a thicker board or a specialist product should be specified instead.

How do I cut plasterboard cleanly on site?

Score firmly through the paper face with a sharp knife and straightedge, then snap the board away from you over the scored line. Run the knife along the back paper to separate the cut. A plasterboard saw can be used for internal cuts and cut-outs around sockets or switches.
