Artist: Kushamona Keemetse

Kushamona was born in Shakawe in Northern Botswana in 1975. She is unmarried and has two daughters and a son. She lives with her mother and children; the rest of their family has passed away.

She learnt weaving from her mother, who wove patterned, open baskets. Her children are still young so she cannot teach them. She weaves all year round, and tries out all types of patterns. She gets inspirations for designs from clothes, blankets and books.

Her favourite design is ‘forehead of the zebra’, and her favourite colours are black and orange. She weaves to support her children.

Kushamona used to collect the raw materials at the river with her mother, but her mother is now too old. She has not encountered any problems during the collection of materials, unlike other weavers. She is proud of what she does and enjoys it.

She was one of the very first weavers to be recognised for the very fine mopendura stitch which characterises many of her baskets.
