Fennel is a member of the carrot family and is native to the Mediterranean area. Its feathery green leaves and white base are almost a cross between celery and carrots. Fennel seeds have been used to flavor Middle Eastern, Indian and Chinese dishes.
Traditional uses include cramping, bloating and gas.
The crescent-shaped seeds of caraway, AKA meridian fennel or Persian cumin, are actually the fruit of this plant. It has long been used for digestive issues like gas and bloating.
