Originally we were going to only buy one Costa Rican coffee this year. So we were aiming to buy one wild tasting coffee from Bean Voyage (we chose Mayra Solis for that). But when we tasted Tatiana’s coffee, we loved it so much that we thought it would be a great addition to our easygoing, comfy category! We also fell in love with her story. Watch Tatiana's short film here - directed and filmed by herself. During Covid, Bean Voyage sponsored this project for coffee producers to learn how to make and share videos and provided them the equipment.

Tatiana Vargas is a small-scale coffee farmer from El Guarco, Cartago, Costa Rica, and co-founder of  Legados Café Artesanal farm and mill which she runs with her mother, Doña Leda. After her father, Don Gerardo, passed away from cancer in 2016, they chose to honour his lifelong dream of processing and exporting his own coffee. What began as a family farm 35 years ago became a deeply personal mission: to carry forward his legacy through every harvest.

In 2018, Tatiana and her mother opened their own small micro-mill, becoming some of the first women in their region to run and operate a coffee farm independently. Despite facing doubt and criticism, they committed to an artisanal approach, producing small lots using honey and natural processes, drying the coffee in the sun, and avoiding water during processing. Through dedication and resilience, they successfully began exporting their coffee.

The name Legados - meaning “legacies” - reflects their belief that people live on through the impact they leave on others. Each cup is an invitation to create meaningful moments and reflect on their father/husband's legacy. Through further education and support from Bean Voyage, Tatiana and Leda have strengthened their knowledge and found community among other women coffee producers, continuing to grow Gerardo's dream with care, purpose, and heart:
'My mother and I thought we needed more education on many aspects of coffee production, especially post-harvest management, processing, drying, storage, quality control, and more. While searching for knowledge, we discovered Bean Voyage on the internet and immediately contacted them to start their training programs. These programs focused on the topics we needed. As women coffee farmers who run our own farm and do the work ourselves, we often felt like we were fighting adversity alone. At Bean Voyage, we met other women in similar situations, which was a great inspiration for us to keep fighting and achieve our dreams.
