Thoughts On Religious ExperienceThe nature of spiritual experience is probably both the most interesting and the most difficult subject in Christian literature: interesting because it concerns human life in all observable stages from childhood to death, and embraces all the emotions and behaviour possible in a man regenerated by the Holy Spirit; difficult because the adequate treatment of the subject makes immense demands upon the author. The nature of spiritual experience is probably both the most interesting and the most difficult subject in Christian literature: interesting because it concerns human life in all observable stages from childhood to death, and embraces all the emotions and behaviour possible in a man regenerated by the Holy Spirit; difficult because the adequate treatment of the subject makes immense demands upon the author. To trace sanctification and backsliding, as they appear in human consciousness, presupposes a sound biblical theology as well as a spirituality of mind and a pastoral knowledge broad enough to interpret all the varieties in type which occur. Twenty years a pastor and preacher in a revival era, then forty years a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary (commenced in 1812 when he was the sole instructor), Archibald Alexander brought to this volume the best wisdom of his life. From his own observations, and from case histories drawn from Christian biography, he follows his subject with the hand of a master. He was, in Dr. Theodore Woolsey’s words, ‘The Shakespeare of the Christian heart’. Primarily concerned with what ought to be the impression made upon the life by scriptural truths he has nothing of the vague devotionalism of the religious mystics. But within this biblical context a wide variety of experiences passes under review, along with a consideration of the practical problems involved in an understanding of the new-birth, Christian growth, spiritual conflict and kindred subjects. This is a lucid and fascinating volume almost alone in the field which it covers.

______________

Alexander was unanimously chosen as the leading professor of Princeton Theological Seminary on its organisation in 1812. He faithfully laboured there for forty years, until his death in 1851. He was always busy and hardly an edition of the Princeton Review appeared without an article from him between 1829-1850. With the exception of occasional sermons and contributions to periodicals, he did not publish anything until he was 52 years old. His first work was Outlines of the Evidences of Christianity (1823), followed by many other works. During his time at Princeton, he earned a reputation as an outstanding educator and became renowned for his understanding of the nature and effects of biblical piety.

______________

‘Archibald Alexander is not only a favourite for me but one who speaks as though he knows me as a friend. That is the feeling of many who read him, male and female, young and old. “He speaks to my heart”, my wife says. The experiences of a Christian, from new birth to death, are so varied and mysterious that it requires the love and wisdom of Christ to speak of them safely. No one pattern fits all. To Alexander this grace was given. Those who knew him well, such as Dr A.A.Hodge, did not think it too much to say of him: “More than any man of his generation he appeared to those who heard him to be endured with the knowledge and clothed with the authority of a prophet sent immediately from God.”‘ IAIN H. Not my favorite by her
Format: Paperback
I have to say that Carley Fortune can write a really beautiful love story. I enjoyed this one but not nearly as much as This Summer Will be Different. Sam is absolutely precious and his brother Charlie is trouble with a capital T but in the funniest and sweetest way (for the most part). And Percy's journey from 13 to 30 is a nice development throughout. I enjoy the multiple timelines and to see Percy and Sam's love for each other grow from meeting the summer they turn 13. This story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. SPOILER: DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT ANYTHING SPOILED!!! I was ready to give this book at least a 3.5 ⭐ until the cheating with the brother. Of course it was a one time regrettable mistake, but I am auto out on a cheating trope. And making it with his brother just sets the relationship up for failure no matter how many promises of forgiveness. But that's just my opinion. So be warned.

A Revolution of Faith and Freedom
Format: Hardcover
Eric Metaxas’s Revolution: The Birth of the Greatest Nation in the History of the World presents the American founding as far more than a political dispute over taxes or power—it is portrayed as an epic struggle between liberty and tyranny, virtue and corruption, good and evil. Through vivid storytelling and rich historical detail, Metaxas casts the Revolutionary era as a moral drama in which ordinary men were called to extraordinary courage against overwhelming odds in their fight for freedom. The book compellingly shows how patriots like Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, John Adams, Abigail Adams, Benjamin Rush, James Otis, Henry Knox, Paul Revere, John Hancock, Thomas Paine, George Washington, Martha Washington, and others, understood the conflict not merely as resistance to British overreach, but as a defense of God-given liberty against arbitrary, and often brutal, power. A particularly striking theme throughout the book is the Founding Fathers’ deep reliance on Divine Providence. Metaxas highlights how many believed that human rights flowed not from kings or governments, but from God Himself, and that the outcome of the Revolution ultimately rested in His hands. Prayer, biblical conviction, and appeals to Providence are woven into the narrative, reminding readers that the Founders often saw themselves as instruments in a larger story unfolding under God’s sovereign care. Indeed, Providence often revealed His hand in altering the weather and divinely guiding the patriots as they fought the British forces. The result is a sweeping and engaging account of America’s birth that frames the Revolution as both a historical and spiritual struggle, fought with courage, conviction, virtue, and faith.

A New Classic
Format: Kindle
I pre-ordered, so I was able to get the PDF and start reading early. Of all the books I own on the American Revolution, I think this one stands to become my "go to." It is encyclopedic in scope, but deftly avoids becoming a drudgery or a slog through a mire of textbook facts. Somehow, Eric has managed to include a great deal of detail without losing any of the drama. It’s the story that rises to the fore in a gripping tale that just happens to be true (and much more than that, is our heritage). All the trademark “Metaxas” hallmarks are here: judiciously placed humor and lightheartedness that never descends into silliness, seriousness that somehow never lacks in winsomeness, depth that never smothers. He manages to portray both the soberness that the subject deserves without losing the hopefulness that the story of the Revolution should inspire in us. And along the way, you’ll find yourself better understanding what “went down” and (just as importantly) what it means to you today. Excellent work. If you think another history book on the American Revolution cannot inspire you or keep your attention, this one is up to the challenge.
