Роман Ж. Сарамаґо 'Прозріння' (2004) — це і політична сатира, і філософська притча, в якій письменник вибудовує, по суті, сучасну модель світу, викриваючи при цьому прогниле демократичне суспільство. Події у 'Прозрінні' відбуваються через чотири роки після опи­саних у романі 'Сліпота'. Нова епідемія вразила місто. Колір цьо­го лиха, як і тоді, білий: білі, тобто незаповнені, бюлетені на виборах — це для влади безперечні ознаки заколоту. Уряд демонстративно покидає столицю, прихопивши поліцію та комунальні служби.

Проте ті самі люди, які чотири роки тому, осліпнувши, уподібнилися тваринам, цього разу підтримують своє місто у повному порядку: як і раніше працюють магазини та інші установи, на вулицях немає сміття, не зростає злочинність. Але це тільки сильніше переконує уряд у наявності заколоту. Аби виявити заколотників, до міста направили трьох агентів — комісара та двох його помічників. У них є зачіпка — жінка, яка, коли сталася епідемія сліпоти, єдина не осліпла.

Познайомившись із нею ближче, комісар зрозумів, що вона ні в чому не винна, проте його висновок аж ніяк не влаштовує можновладців, які знають, що робити з незручними людьми. Кілька пострілів — і проблему вирішено…
