Growing Bleeding Heart Dicentra Garden Seeds

  • Taxonomy: Dicentra spectabilis (Recently reclassified as Lamprocapnos spectabilis)
  • Other Names: Asian Bleeding Heart, Lyre Flower, Lady-in-a-Bath
  • Seed Type: Perennial
  • Sow Indoors or Outdoors: Bleeding Heart is recommended to begin indoors 12 – 14 weeks prior to the frost because dicentra seeds are perennials that require 56 – 70 days to germinate with full lighting. Once sprouted, seedlings will require a shaded spot in the garden or indoors. Plants may reseed if grown in optimal shaded gardens.
  • Days to Maturity: 2nd Year Maturity
  • Hardiness Zone: 3 – 9
  • Planting Depth: Plant 4 – 6 seeds ½” deep
  • Plant Spacing: 24”
  • Growth Habit: 24 – 36” tall leafy upright with an 18 – 30” spread of dangling “heart-shaped” blooms
  • Soil Preference: Organically rich, medium moist, well-drained
  • Light Preference: Partial Shade – Full Shade
  • Diseases/Pests/Troubleshooting: Bleeding Heart is a rare full-shade performer intolerant to dry soils in the summer and moist soils in the winter. Leaves will go dormant in summer and best grown alongside ferns and other late perennials. Dicentra has no serious pests or diseases but monitor for aphids, as some indoor plants are susceptible to infestations.
  • Color: Delicate pink and white “hearts” stemmed in rich greens

Dicentra spectabilis, or more commonly known as Bleeding Heart, is a unique flowering member of the dicentra family Papaveraceae and native to the shaded and temperate regions of Siberia, China, Korea, and Japan. Bleeding Heart’s taxonomical classification was recently changed from Dicentra spectabilis to Lamprocapnos spectabilis, but is still widely referred to and sold by its former name. The first specimens were introduced to the west by 19th century Scottish botanist Robert Fortune.

Fly fishing dog in training
This thing is so dang cute! It’s proven to be durable for my small dog, too. He drags it all around inside and outside and it’s no worse for the west.

Lovely Salmon
Our dog LOVES this toy. She loves it so intensely we had to purchase a second salmon. She is a (smaller) medium sized dog and it took her about a year to even half tear a fin. This brand is our favorite and we are slowly collecting every toy they make.

Dog loves this toy
Our Golden Retriever loves this toy, I would recommend it for that reason. But she did manage to chew off the smaller fins within the first couple of days. But considering she is pretty rough on her toys, I would still recommend it.

My dog loves his fish!
It's very strong and durable except for the patch on it my dog removed it in 10 minutes but the fish itself is holding up great!
