This is a breathtaking necklace is from the Turkman peoples of Central Asia.  This stype of necklace is known as a "Bukov," meaning "neck band," and is specific to the Yomud and Salor tribes of Western and Southern Turkmenia.  The neck band includes an ingenious hook system that allows the large central pendant to come on and off.  The very definition of a statement piece!

Old Silver Jewellery of the Turkoman, by Dieter and Reinhold Schletzer, includes an extensive discussion of the various motifs of the bukov have special meeting, with many feauturing a butterfly design, signaling rebirth, "analogous to the tripartite division of the universe."  However you interpret the iconography, this is a very special piece!

This necklace is a true work of art, with a beautiful light gold wash, known as "fire gilding," original lovely table-cut carnelian stones, and silver tassels.  Carnelian stones were believed to protect the wearer from illness and death and the stones on this piece appear original and in very good condition.

The central pendent piece of the bukov measures 6.5 inches wide and 3 inches tall, not including the tassels, which add an additional 3 inches.  The metal band measures 1 inch width and is approximately 20 inches long.  The central piece weighs 167.6 grams, while the band measures an additional 162.8 grams.

Overall, this piece is in remarkable condition.  The stones are uniformly beautiful, including the stones on the neck band portion of the necklace.  The gilding is also in good condition, although there is certainy some wear, consistent with a piece of this age.  The metal band has a bulge at the top as well.  Additionally, one of the tassels on the side of the neck band appears to have been replaced, and one of the tassels in the front is slightly longer than the others and may also be a replacement.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has an excellent history of the Turkman peoples and the role of jewelry in the culture of these Central Asian nomads:

Although nominally Sunni Muslim, the Turkmen kept many of their pre-Islamic customs and beliefs, which were often embodied in the jewelry they made and wore. Turkmen silver jewelry carried deep symbolic meanings and often marked an individual’s passage from one stage of life to another. From a very early age, a woman started wearing jewelry whose shapes and materials were believed to ensure her ability to bear healthy children later in life. The amount of embellishments a girl wore increased as she approached marriageable age. Once she had had her first children, and her fertility had been established, the amount of jewelry she received and wore decreased. In addition, silver jewelry believed to ward off evil and illness was worn by men, women, and especially by children.

Jewelry was a significant financial investment, as it was handcrafted from precious materials. There were cases when, in times of dire need, a woman would part with her jewelry in order to help the survival of the tribe. Significant in size and weight, Turkmen jewelry objects were made of silver, decorated with semi-precious stones, and sometimes gilded for an added color effect and value.

The Met explains that "Pieces of carnelian, a bright red colored stone, are popular because they are believed to protect the wearers from illness and death."

This artist of faith has a very inspiring and uplifting story.
Format: Paperback
This book was a gift to a family member. The family member was not only touched by the thoughtfulness but by the story and art in this little book. Lilias Trotter was a remarkable woman of true, deep faith and made a difference in so many lives. We could all learn from her example and be inspired by her commitment to the people whose lives she touched. Recommend this book for artists and born again believers alike. God is in the details!

A beautifully crafted invitation to journal
Format: Paperback
Lilias Trotter Legacy’s latest book Beholdings is not so much a text as it is a beautifully crafted invitation. Inspired by the journals and sketches of Lilias Trotter (1853-1928—English missionary to Algeria, artist, writer, and journaler par excellence), biographer Miriam Rockness invites the reader to try their own hand at journaling, using Trotter as a model and guide. Rockness herself is no stranger to journaling, and her Preface to Beholdings enumerates the many benefits that await any reader who is willing to commit to the discipline for a period of time. In the short term, Rockness describes how journaling encourages one to focus, to pay attention, to take the time to behold the beauty in the world before one’s very eyes. Each page following the Preface includes a quote designed to stir the imagination, and an image from Trotter’s journals to illustrate what it means to behold an acorn, a flower petal, a sunrise in the Algerian desert. It is not just to see what is before one’s eyes, but to hold it in the mind’s eye and cherish it. As Simone Weil said, “Attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer. It presupposes faith and love.” It is this kind of attention that Rockness encourages the journaler to cultivate, and it is the kind of attention that Lilias Trotter so artfully illustrates. There is ample space on each page for the journaler, thus inspired, to record his or her observations, musings, sketches, or doodles. In the longer term, Rockness suggests that journaling helps cultivate a sense of proportion and perspective. She describes looking back with her husband over her journals from years before, reliving the moments that might otherwise have been forgotten, and allowing those glimpses in the rear view mirror to inform present day experience. Sometimes one finds that images seen in the rear view mirror really are smaller than they appeared at the time! In addition to being an incitement to journaling, Beholdings is a beautifully produced creation in its own right. Great thought has gone into the selection of the typeface, the texture and feel of the paper, the quality of the images reproduced. This makes Beholdings not only a delight to own, but also an exquisite gift to offer. My advice: buy one for yourself, and another for someone you love.

Be clear that it's a blank journal you create, with brief quotes and thumbnail art
Format: Paperback
If one is looking for a personal journal of empty lined pages ~ and a brief Lilias Trotter quote with a thumbnail-size photo of her art on each page then this is for you. I understood it was a book of her journalling with more viewable-size sketches.
