Final Thoughts First

A chamuco, in Mexican folklore, is a mischievous little devil — not menacing, exactly, but impish, the kind of spirit that gets into trouble and enjoys every minute of it. It's a fitting name for a tequila born from an unlikely trio: a film director, a caricaturist, and a young entrepreneur, who founded the brand together in 1997. The devilish branding has stuck ever since, an irreverent counterpoint to a genuinely serious production process underneath.

Chamucos sources its 100% organic Blue Weber agave from growers across both the highlands and lowlands of Jalisco, slow-cooked in autoclave ovens before double pot still distillation. The añejo expression spends 18 months in new medium-char American white oak barrels sourced from Kentucky, aged in a cool, high-altitude environment near Mazamitla that gives the warehouse — and the spirit maturing inside it — a character distinct from the hotter, more typical tequila-producing lowlands. Wine Enthusiast awarded the añejo 92 Points: "the aroma is fresh and bright, welcoming with pineapple and pear. The palate echoes those flavors, and surprises with a waft of smokiness too. All together, this fruity-smoky profile suggests charred pineapple, plus a vanilla and clove finish."

Master distiller and owner Mark Howard personally prepares and blends every batch. The result is a tequila of genuine richness — roasted agave, vanilla, butterscotch, dark chocolate, caramel, and toasted oak — bottled in hand-blown glass and sealed with a distinctive rubber stopper instead of a cork. A small-batch, organic, genuinely well-aged añejo with a sense of humor built right into the name.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Chamucos was founded in 1997 by film director Antonio Urrutia, alongside a caricaturist and a young entrepreneur, with production originally based at Tequila Quiote. The brand has since moved production twice — first to Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados in 2008, and ultimately to Premium de Jalisco, where it is produced today. Premium de Jalisco sources its 100% organic Blue Weber agave from growers in both the highlands and lowlands of Jalisco, since the high-altitude Mazamitla region itself — more rainforest than desert — is unsuited to agave cultivation. That cool climate does, however, allow for an unusually long 7-to-10-day fermentation and gives the aging warehouse a distinctive environment.

Production follows a traditional but modernized path: agave is slow-cooked in autoclave ovens, milled with a modern roller mill, and double-distilled in pot stills. The añejo expression ages 18 months in new, medium-char American white oak casks sourced from Kentucky — a longer and more deliberate oak program than the brand's reposado, which ages eight months in similar casks. Every batch is personally prepared and blended by master distiller and owner Mark Howard. The finished spirit is bottled in distinctive hand-blown glass bottles, sealed with a rubber stopper rather than a traditional cork — opened by applying pressure to each side in turn to release it.

Critics Reviews

Wine Enthusiast — 92 Points:
"The aroma is fresh and bright, welcoming with pineapple and pear. The palate echoes those flavors, and surprises with a waft of smokiness too. All together, this fruity-smoky profile suggests charred pineapple, plus a vanilla and clove finish."

Wine.com (confirmed tasting note):
"Tequila Chamucos Anejo delivers such a captivating perfume — jasmine, brown sugared agave, summer peach and buttered toast; it translates equally well on the palate. Rich and generously textured with a velvet creaminess, a hint of tobacco and black pepper give this aged spirit extra oomph."

For Tequila Lovers (confirmed, Mark Howard's own tasting notes):
"Aroma: Rich, sweet aromas of toasted oak and vanilla, caramel and toffee layered with a butterscotch, tropical fruits, pineapple, toasted almonds and hints of chocolate along with cinnamon and a light touch of smoke. Taste: Elegant and silky, with smooth character that coats the palate with roasted agave and enticing vanilla flavors layered with caramel, toffee, fennel, chocolate and baked or grilled pineapple undertones followed by sun-ripened tropical fruits and spice. Finish: Beautiful, slightly sweet with seductive spice, sweet toffee, vanilla essence and tropical spice and buttery undertones."

Blackwell's confirmed tasting notes:
"Nose: Roasted agave, vanilla, and butterscotch with hints of dark chocolate, dried fruit, and warm spice. Palate: Smooth and full-bodied with flavors of toasted oak, caramel, baking spices, and a touch of citrus zest. Finish: Long and warming, with lingering notes of cocoa, oak, and a peppery kick."

Liquor Geeks (confirmed):
"Appearance: rich, amber hue. Aroma: notes of dried fruit, hints of almonds, vanilla and chocolate notes. Flavor: sweetness from dried fruit, almond flavors, vanilla and chocolate undertones, velvety smoothness."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Brilliant warm amber. Fresh and bright, welcoming with pineapple and pear leading the aromatic profile. Roasted agave, vanilla, and butterscotch follow with warm, oak-driven sweetness. Dried fruit, toasted almonds, and hints of dark chocolate add layered complexity, with cinnamon and a light touch of smoke threading through.

Palate
Smooth and full-bodied, echoing the nose's fruity character while surprising with a waft of smokiness — charred pineapple alongside roasted agave. Caramel, toffee, and toasted oak build through the mid-palate, with fennel, chocolate, and grilled pineapple undertones. Sun-ripened tropical fruits and baking spices add richness, finished with a touch of citrus zest.

Finish
Long and warming, with a vanilla and clove finish carrying lingering notes of cocoa, oak, and a peppery kick. Slightly sweet, with seductive spice and buttery undertones closing out an elegant, silky finish.

A Nutritional Treat!
My German Shepherd loves this so much, I sometimes use it as a training treat! Sweet Potato is beneficial to dogs. The only complaint I have is the size consistency from bag to bag.

They used to be soft and moist but not now
These used to be one of my dogs’ favorite sweet potato treats, but they’ve gotten too hard and thick to cut for their morning snack or cut for their puzzle pieces. Because they’re not only too hard to cut, they’re also too hard for them to eat. Both, my Maltese and Shih Tzu love sweet potato treats, but they leave the dry ones behind. Since something made the Shih Tzu so sick that I had to spend a small fortune at the vet trying to make her better, she avoids all dry treats now and unfortunately that includes a lot of necessary nutrients. I hope these go back to being soft and moist the way they used to be!

A favorite healthy treat for my 6 pups!
My six dogs absolutely love these treats! I just ordered my third bag.I love knowing they are healthy and good for dogs with sensitive stomachs. The smell is great and reminds me a little bit of Thanksgiving. Each bag has several different sized treats so I can give my bigger dogs a bigger one and smaller dogs a smaller piece. They are wavy like a ruffle potato chip, but chewy, which is great because that means it takes my pups a minute or two to eat. They are a great price because my local grocery store sells the same type of treat in a smaller size bag at a higher price than these.

A sweet potato for a fussy little girl no more 😁
I have a little Jack Russell and she is a fussy little thing😂 I’ve gone through so many treats that she won’t eat but when I found these treats, she loves them and that’s all I have to go off of is that my fussy little dog loves these treats,so to me they’re a good treat, but that doesn’t mean every dog is gonna love them so I just want to make that clear. I hope your dog will enjoy them the way my little girl does.😉
