Barnes vertelde zelf dat Nachtwoud was geschreven met haar eigen bloed ‘terwijl het nog stroomde’. Die stromende wond was de breuk na een acht jaar lange relatie met de liefde van haar leven, de kunstenares Thelma Wood. Nachtwoud is dan ook een van de eerste romans waarin homoseksualiteit openlijk beschreven wordt. Sinds de publicatie in 1936 is Barnes’ meanderende tour de force een klassieker geworden van de modernistische literatuur.
