Ze zijn klein en groeien in trosjes, half verscholen achter de grote groene bladeren. De olie wordt gewonnen uit de vers geplukte bloemen door middel van stoom destillatie. Deze olie heeft een fruitig, bloemige geur en is gelig van kleur.
Ylang ylang heeft een gunstige invloed op de bloeddruk en hartslag. Het brengt de hormonen in evenwicht, is een uitstekende olie voor de huid en reguleert de talgafscheiding. Ylang ylang is een afrodisiacum. Ylang ylang ontspant, kalmeert en verdrijft koppigheid. Het verlicht uitstekend bij neerslachtigheid, stemmingswisselingen en kwaadheid.
