Na Auschwitz is Sobibor met ruim 34.000 Nederlandse slachtoffers het grootste Nederlandse massagraf. Vanaf 1942 werden hier in anderhalf jaar tijd meer dan 170.000 Joden direct na aankomst vergast. Toch kennen maar weinig mensen dit vernietigingskamp. Na een succesvolle gevangenenopstand in oktober 1943 wordt Sobibor door de nazi's gesloten, de sporen zo veel mogelijk uitgewist.
Aan de stilte op de plek van het kamp komt in 2014 een einde. Onderzoeksjournalist Rosanne Kropman is erbij als archeologen de fundamenten van de acht gaskamers uitgraven. Schep voor schep komen de contouren van het kamp aan de oppervlakte. Vanaf dat moment gaat Kropman op zoek naar de sporen van het kamp. Ze ontmoet de laatste overlevenden van de opstand en hun families, vertelt verhalen van de daders en ziet de moeizame omgang in Polen met het Holocaust-erfgoed. Het donkerste donker werpt nieuw licht op het mysterie dat Sobibor tot op de dag van vandaag is.

I get that battle maps are always a challenge (maps are static - battles are dynamic). This does a fairly adequate job - better than most battle maps - though far from groundbreaking. item arrived well packed - no issues with binding (as some others seem to report). Though the book overall is a bit "warped" and several of the maps are mis-printed or mis-cut as to make them unusable. 3 bad out of 300 - not horrible - again at the price I paid. If the subject interest you - I'd suggest getting - but not a "must have".
