Valbuena 5º 2019 is de meest directe expressie van Vega Sicilia, maar blijft tegelijk een wijn van grote klasse en diepgang. In de neus tonen van rijpe kers, zwarte bes en pruim, verweven met ceder, grafiet, kruidigheid en een subtiele balsamico-toets. In de mond is de wijn vol en harmonieus, met fluweelzachte tannines, frisse zuren en een indrukwekkende balans tussen rijp fruit en structuur. De afdronk is lang en gelaagd, met fijne houttonen die elegant geïntegreerd zijn en een aanhoudende minerale spanning.

Vinificatie.
De druiven worden met de hand geoogst en zorgvuldig geselecteerd. Na fermentatie rijpt de wijn in verschillende types hout om complexiteit en balans op te bouwen: een combinatie van grote vaten en kleinere eikenhouten vaten, met een deel nieuw hout. De totale opvoeding duurt ongeveer vijf jaar, waarbij vatrijping en flesrijping elkaar aanvullen om de wijn bij release al een indrukwekkende harmonie en verfijning te geven.

Het domein.
Vega Sicilia is het historische referentiehuis van Ribera del Duero en staat wereldwijd bekend om zijn compromisloze kwaliteit, lange opvoeding en tijdloze stijl. Het domein werkt met grote aandacht voor terroir, oude stokken en duurzame wijngaardpraktijken, en een sterke focus op bodemgezondheid en biodiversiteit. Valbuena 5º belichaamt deze filosofie op een iets toegankelijkere manier dan Único: nog steeds diep en complex, maar met een eerder open en gastronomische stijl die prachtig evolueert met flesrijping.

A familiar story, just with…..less.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
