Kurkuma is een tropische, warmteminnende plant die gekweekt wordt om zijn aromatische wortelstokken. Deze worden gebruikt in de keuken voor hun warme smaak en typische gele kleur in currygerechten, soepen, rijst en thee. De plant vormt sierlijke groene bladeren en kan in warme omstandigheden ook bloeien.

In België kweek je kurkuma best als potplant. Vanaf het voorjaar groeit hij het best op een warme, lichte plek binnen of in een serre. In de zomer kan hij buiten staan op een beschutte, warme plek in halfzon. In de herfst wordt de plant binnen gehaald om te overwinteren.
