Mesquite Bowl Blank M-1140 3.25" x 9" x 11" 9.6 lbs. This is a beautiful and elongated half-log bowl blank of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall color is the deep reddish brown of Mesquite heartwood surrounded by a thin band of yellow sapwood, with a complete and well-attached dark brown bark on the backside. This blank is longer than it is wide. You have a lot of options with this blank -- it would make a beautiful winged bowl for example, or perhaps an emergent bowl. With the bark on the backside, you have the option of turning a conventional bowl or a "barky" natural-edge bowl. However, if you want a full bark edge on the "natural" rim, you will need to secure the bark with CA glue before and possibly during turning. This is a classic half-log blank, split through the center of the log. It does contain some pith in it and has a few cracks developing, despite being well-sealed. Mesquite is fairly dimensionally stable, so the cracks tend not to develop much compared to other woods. For any that are present, I recommend reinforcing them with CA glue prior to turning. This is a GREEN to partially air-dried bowl blank, meaning that it still retains a lot of its original moisture from when it was a living tree. It has been well-sealed with Anchor Seal and is in the process of slowly drying. It was heat-treated to kill off any hungry critters that may have been burrowing inside. It was measured at 25% MC in May 2022. If you need a current moisture content, please message us and we'll check its status for you. About the Tree This Texas-grown Honey Mesquite tree was harvested in El Campo, Texas in March of 2022. It was cut down by the city for reasons unknown to us, and we were happy to help save the tree from a burn pile. It is possible that this tree was damaged by the Valentine's Day Freeze that Texas suffered in February 2021, which is when our state lost a lot of beautiful trees in an unusually deep and long freeze. You can feel good about this American-grown hardwood being responsibly harvested and turned into beautiful art by YOU. The tree was in healthy growing condition, with a minimum of bug damage and a nice healthy girth to the trunk. There is some minor evidence of fire damage, perhaps from a campfire, near the base of the tree on one side. It may have been in a fairly protected area such as a city park, as the Mesquite is less twisted and gnarly than trees grown in open pastures. The grain looks generally long and straight and of excellent quality for green or dried turning. |

This book is aimed directly at professional web designers and is build around Adobe CS6. It can be helpful, but...

Preface - I have a lot of experience making webpages and sites, but my experience is very dated (I haven't played with actual web programming in more than a decade). Many things have changed since I was building websites - including the standardization of HTML 5 and the widespread use of CSS.
Since I am rebuilding a number of personal webpages - as well as my commercial site - my wife bought me this book to help me catch up on the new technology.
Pluses -
1) The book does a really good job of giving a decent overview of the new technologies I need to learn. Like most "Dummies" books, it is easy to read and follow the instructions and information.
2) The book is aimed at actual web designers and while I am not a professional designer, the tips and tricks laid out in this book are very helpful.
3) I am not sure that someone completely new to website construction would get as much out of it as I did - there are a lot of assumptions made by the author about the reader's grasp of certain web technologies. That said, I think someone new to web design could probably still figure out what is being said.
Negatives -
1) This book is aimed at someone looking to become a professional web designer. It is NOT a low level book and covers many things that a personal website designer is not likely to need. Given the fairly low price of the book, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it isn't presented that way in the advertisements for the book.
2 (and this is the biggie...) The book is built around using a VERY expensive piece of software - Adobe Creative Suite cs6. This software runs ~$1,000. This makes sense if you are trying to become a professional web designer, but for someone at home just doing a website for themselves, it is WAY out of most people's price range. You don't need that software to learn the lessons in the book, but it is heavily slanted for that piece of software. Most of the screenshots are aimed at the Adobe software. I am using a fairly decent piece of software, but I will need to get a book on that particular software to try to do some of the things the book talks about.
I found the book helpful, but flawed for anyone NOT getting into professional web design.

Great reference book
Format: Paperback
I started reading this book and gave up after I realized I didn't have the programs that it called for. (The programs are very expensive!) However, I kept this on hand because I started to do more research on HTML codes and taught myself (with some guidence from this book) how to create my own webpages using simple design programs AND coding other sites soley with HTML codes! Decently priced and something good to have on hand when that one thing just doesn't make sense...

Awesome Book!!

I was a little skeptical about reading this book due to previous encounters with the Holy Spirit concerning Tim Ross. However, I believe GOD has given me clearance to read this book, and because of this book or shall I say the GOD given words in this book, Welcome to the Basement has been a comprised or a condensed yet straight to the point version of another book I was in the process of reading. It took the leg work out and made it into a simple and clear insight on how to practice the way of Jesus based on the life of Jesus and how to invite others to the table to eat with Jesus. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to slowly start back getting down into the basement. Thank You GOD and thank you, Tim Ross, for this book. It was a goldmine!! Peace, love, blessings, Erika.
