The kimono features the blossom branches on a turquoise-blue background with natural shades of green and white. Vincent painted one of his favourite subjects - large, flowering branches set against a blue sky - as a gift to celebrate the birth of his godson, who was named after him: Vincent Willem. As a symbol of young life, Vincent chose the branches of the almond tree, one of the earliest flowering trees - as early as February - that announce spring. The subject, the sharp outlines, and the placement of the tree in the painting is evidence of the inspiration Van Gogh found in Japanese woodblock prints.
