The Love Story of Kajal Machhli - Gond Tale
ABOUT THE ARTFORM
GOND paintings are a form of painting from folk and tribal art that is practiced by one of the largest tribes in India. Out of Ginds, the Pradhan Gonds are considered as the most creative, proficient both with music and paintings. Gond comes from the Dravidian expression, Kond which means ‘the green mountain’. While Gond paintings are considered to be from predominantly from Madhya Pradesh.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Japani Shyam is one of the prominent Gond artists and daughter of the legend Jangarh Singh Shyam, who is carrying forward the legacy. She started young learning from her father and won The Kamla Devi Award at the age of 11. She is also the recepient of FICCI Young Achiever’s Award in 2018.
WHAT WE LEARN
We will create a large 2ft x 3ft artwork based on a Gond folktale, the love story of Kajal Machhli. In this 16 hours workshop, we explore this folktale as sung by the Pardhan Gonds. The artist will narrate the story and would illustrate the story step by step to create a composition.
Additionally, we make an effort to understand the culture and spirit of Gond, how the artist translates her thoughts on paper, and the folklores. On the journey, you will learn different elements, textures, and techniques of composition.
SIZE OF THE ARTWORK
The artist will be creating a 2ft x 3ft artwork with the complete story narration. If you want to variate on the size as per your comfort or choose to do multiple artworks instead of one, we will help you with that. You may choose a size you are comfortable with.
You can either follow what the artist is creating or we encourage and support you to create your own original composition.

Canvas / 300+ gsm paper/ handmade paper
Acrylic/ Poster/ Gauche paints
Brushes
**Recordings of the workshop would be uploaded daily after session and would have lifetime access to participants.
