The Driving Force of the Scottish Renaissance

MACDIARMID, Hugh. A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood & Sons Limited. 1926.

8vo. Publisher’s dark blue boards, gilt vignette to upper board, spine and upper board lettered in gilt, in the publisher’s pale blue printed dust-jacket; pp. [viii], 108; jacket some-what faded with spine somewhat sunned and small loss to head of spine, corners and spine ends of boards lightly worn; some offsetting to endpapers, sporadic light spotting, p. 3 somewhat browned; a very good copy; half-title inscribed ‘Hugh MacDiarmid | (C. M. Grieve) | Montrose. | March | 1946’.

First edition, signed by the poet in his own name and his pen name, the culmination of MacDiarmid’s use of ‘synthetic Scots’.

MacDiarmid (born Christopher Murray Grieve, 1892–1978) ‘almost single-handedly forged a Scottish Renaissance movement [...] MacDiarmid chose to write in Scots rather than Gaelic, but saw that it was necessary to improve the capabilities of the language by reviving old Scots words and borrowing freely from Gaelic and other sources. Thus he created a synthetic Scots, later sometimes known as “Lallans”’ (National Library of Scotland, online). This ‘synthetic Scots’ is exemplified here, this edition providing a twelve-page glossary of Scots terminology used in the text.

This copy was signed in Montrose in 1946; MacDiarmid had moved to the coastal town in 1919, where he worked for a time as editor and reporter for the Montrose Review, and it was there that he wrote the present work, as well as his first book, Annals of the Five Senses, as well as Sangschaw and Penny Wheep.

Works
Size: 8.5"x11"
Works great for sublimation. Get plenty of sheets. Great value for the price. The paper is pretty thick and seems to hold a good amount of ink without smearing.

My go-to sublimation paper for crafting
Size: 8.5"x11"
I've used several sublimation papers, and this one has worked really well for my crafting projects. The colors transfer bright and vibrant, and the images come out crisp with good detail when using the proper sublimation printer and ink. The paper feeds smoothly through my printer and feels like a good quality weight—not too thin and not overly thick. I've used it for tumblers, keychains, and other sublimation projects, and I've been happy with the results. I also appreciate getting 110 sheets in one pack because it lasts a while, especially when working on multiple projects at once. Overall, this is a reliable sublimation paper that gives consistent results and is great for crafters or small business owners.

Amazing product!
Set name: Sublimation Printer, Set name: Sublimation Printer
All I can say is "WOW". I was skeptical about changing over from my Sawgrass to another brand of sublimation printers. But now I wish I started here from the start! Not only does this machine cost a good amount less with the same paper sizes and options as my SG500 but the ink is cheaper per cartridge and 11ml larger than the standard 30ml I am use to. Set up was super easy, as well as the connection. My prints are bold, bright, and beautiful. I am amazed! I am thankful that the details in the prints show through no matter what material I am pressing on. As a business owner, I need a good, efficient printer that doesn't cost more than the product I am selling. I can't wait to continue using my machine. I have not run into any maintenance issue and can not speak on anything of that as of now. Attached photos; however, my camera did not do it justice.
