Description:
The gripping true story of one man's ten-year expedition from a village in West Africa to the Arctic Circle - a rare gem of travel writing which has inspired a generation
'The play of moonlight on the icebergs was indescribably strange, and its magnificent refracted shimmers were brighter than day. One night, fooled by its brilliance, I got up at three in the morning.'
Scorching heat, rich, fertile soil and treacherous snakes marked the landscape in which Kpomassie grew up in 1950s Togo, West Africa. When, as a teenager, he discovered a book on Greenland, this distant land of snow and ice became an instant obsession and he embarked on the adventure of a lifetime.
In this work of rich, immersive travel writing Kpomassie invites the reader to join him on his audacious journey as he makes his way from the Equator to the bitter cold of the Arctic and settles into life with the Inuit peoples, adapting to their foods and customs. Part memoir, part anthropological observation, this warm, captivating narrative teems with nuanced observations on community, belonging and colonization.
Originally published in 1981, this critically acclaimed work has been translated into nine languages and is a rare example of travel writing from a West African perspective that highlights unexpected connection between cultures despite their contrasting landscapes.
This translation by James Kirkup has previously been published with the title An African in Greenland

Fantastic soap for the dermatitis and eczema prone
You guyyyyysss, my hands have no dry, itchy spots right now. None. This is remarkable because before now I have for years had issues with eczema/contact dermatitis patches that have at times (aka: most times) been pretty unbearable. To say that I’m overjoyed to have found a natural soap that truly works for me is an understatement. When you use this, you can feel that it’s moisturizing your skin. It’s fantastic. If you haven’t tried it, do yourself a favor and get yourself a bar. I’m wondering now if I can use it on my entire body and to wash my hair. That’s probably a little overboard, but it’s that good and now that I’ve used it I suspect all my skin problems are contact dermatitis that could be solved by the right soap/shampoo.

Best I’ve found yet for facial psoriasis
Anyone who has facial psoriasis will tell you there are not a lot of products that you can put on your face without irritation or flareups. This soap is just what I needed. There are no irritating chemicals or perfumes in this soap. I have read other reviews that the soap does not last very long but there is a way to use it to make it last. First, I wet my face and then I wet my fingertips and rub my finger tips across the dry bar of soap and then lightly rub my face with my fingertips softening the plaques and then lightly wash with a soft cotton washcloth. It is not really moisturizing but not over drying either. I follow up with an organic vegetable-based glycerin oil to moisturize. This is the best product I have found yet.

Heals skin
It definitely dries out your skin quickly but I do recommend moisture so the skin won’t crack or you get open cuts as your dermatitis is healing. I have dermatitis really bad where my skin drys and hurts when I have a cut, So far it’s working as intended.
