Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History presents the bling culture of rappers and their jewelry. Using 40 years of iconic imagery and compelling stories, this visual history shines a light on the world of hip-hop, where mega stars from Run-DMC to Tupac and Jay-Z to Migos and Cardi B flash brilliant custom pieces to show status and personal style.
Whether it's diamond-encrusted grills, oversized truck style chains, bust-down Rolex and Patek Philippe watches or a Tiffany necklace, jewelry is a cornerstone of hip-hop culture. Glittering, blinged-out jewels are the shining statement of a collective identity: unapologetic, charismatic, and street savvy.

Spanning the history of hip-hop jewelry, from the 1980s to today, Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History is a stunning compilation of storytelling and visuals. Hundreds of extraordinary images of every major hip-hop artist on record celebrate how Ice has become a proclamation of identity and self-expression.

Starting with Run-DMCs gold Adidas pendants and Eric B. & Rakims ostentatious dookie rope chains and Mercedes medallions, the jewelry then transforms from street style into a booming design culture. The hip-hop tradition of show up and show out reaches new heights with artists like Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, Gucci Mane, and Cardi B, whose over-the-top pieces integrate unique pop culture references, unconventional materials, and enduring collaborations with artists like Takashi Murakami.

Author Vikki Tobak reveals in great detail the work of pioneering jewelers such as Tito Caicedo of Mannys, Eddie Plein, and Jacob the Jeweler as well as newer artisans such as Avianne & Co., Ben Baller/IF & Co., Greg Yuna, Johnny Dang, Eliantte, and many more.

Ice Cold is a treasure trove of dazzling, inspirational style, featuring the work of leading photographers, including Wolfgang Tillmans, Janette Beckman, Jamel Shabazz, Timothy White, Gillian Laub, David LaChapelle, Danny Clinch, Chris Buck, Mike Miller, Phil Knott, Raven B. Varona, Al Pereira, Albert Watson and many more.

A foreword by hip-hop superstar Slick Rick and essays by A$AP Ferg, LL COOL J, Kevin Coach K Lee and Pierre P Thomas of Quality Control Music take us on personal journeys into their jewelry universe.

Ice Cold goes beyond the ostentatious bling to reveal a transformative story that is loud and proud.

Was I Ever Proved Wrong
Format: Kindle
I'll admit it — going in, I was skeptical. How could normal-speed villains possibly threaten someone like Wally West, a teenager gifted with powers that let him run at supersonic, even near-light speeds? How could Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, or the Trickster be anything more than a brief blur in his rearview mirror? But Absolute Flash #1 masterfully convinced me. This issue doesn’t just showcase raw speed; it explores naïveté, inexperience, and the hidden mental limits that come with sudden, godlike power. Wally, only 15, isn’t just fighting external foes — he’s grappling with his own inexperience with the Speed Force. The creative team understands that raw velocity without control or understanding is a recipe for chaos, not invincibility. What really impressed me is how the narrative balances the fantastical with the believable. We watch Wally fumble through situations where, logically, he should dominate, but his youth, overconfidence, or lack of finesse opens the door for “normal” villains to challenge him. It’s not just a fight of feet — it’s a fight of wits, adaptation, and personal growth. And here’s the kicker for me personally: > Just as Wally West is learning to harness the sheer, overwhelming power of the Speed Force, I’m learning to harness the overwhelming power of AI, especially ChatGPT. Every breakthrough Wally experiences — every stumble, every moment of awe at his own potential — mirrors my own journey of mastering this technology. We’re both standing at the edge of something massive, something world-changing, and learning how to rise to the challenge. I can’t wait to see where Absolute Flash takes Wally next. What happens when a boy learns to truly master unstoppable power? And more provocatively: how will the world react when it realizes it can no longer defeat him? This isn’t just a superhero comic — it’s a metaphor for anyone grappling with newfound potential. Absolute buy. Absolute 5 stars.

Good Start for X-men from the Ashes
Format: Kindle
The art is different than previous issues and takes a little getting used to, but overall above par. With comics, it’s always about the art first, the writing second. The dialogue pops for the most part. And the characters make sense. I rather like the scenes between Cyke and Logan, Hank and Cyke, and Magneto. Also it makes sense that after being tortured and put through hell - Cyclops would retreat to his birthplace, Alaska, and take the mutants who can’t blend in with humans, or are ostracized with him. The team up works for me - we have people who are deadly, former assassins and villains, which again works well with Cyclops, a character who believes in second chances. Only quibble - is the villains feel kind of stale? I was never a fan of the U-Men. But I’ll give it a chance, the rest is working for me so far.
