Antique Victorian Civil war era traveling paletot. This is a beautiful womens coat from the Civil war era that is fashioned of brown wool and lined in brown polished cotton. This paletot features cartridge pleating at the yoke and piped seams. The piece is entirely hand stitched in little tiny stitches; I do so admire the seamstresses and tailors of that time! The inside of the lower sleeves also has hand quilted silk lining that is about 4" deep into the sleeve. The collar trim is sewn with little tiny hand stitches as well. The very bottom hem feels padded; but I cannot see inside as the stitching is so tightly done. Oddly the neckline closure is with 3 hooks and thread eyes. I suspect this may have been later added. There are buttons, but no button holes.
Condition
Condition is good to age; There is a lot of wear including some shatter of the wool and some holes at the neckline area of the collar. Some minor small discoloration areas that are small and not readily noticed. A few tiny holes throughout... and a sleeve that is very worn and down to the threads... It has a sheer patch basted on to it to preserve the area.
