Rolex’s original GMT-Master was conceived and developed in 1955 as a way for Pan Am pilots to keep track of two different time zones at once, allowing them to maintain a regular sleep schedule. It’s no surprise then that its little brother — the GMT-Master II — became a sensation among jet-setters the world over, earning it the nickname “The Cosmopolitan Watch”.

While the “Coke” (black and red) and “Pepsi” (red and blue) bezels proved an iconic look for the GMT-Master II, the “Root Beer” model has developed infinitely more value as a collectible with its atypically warm ‘70s-inspired aesthetic. So named for its light brown and yellow bezel haloing a dark brown dial, this piece from the late 1980s is almost identical to the Rolex that became Clint Eastwood’s signature watch. It is also among the first of the GMT-Master IIs to feature a finish that combines its traditional stainless steel with 18-karat yellow gold, a look that is complimented by a
similarly two-toned oyster bracelet.

With a more classical look than what ultimately became the GMT-Master II’s classic look, this unusual variation on one of Rolex’s most beloved creations breathes an air of steady, quiet sophistication into any collection.
