Constance Spurlock studied ceramics with Glen Lukens in California and later continued her ceramic studies under Arthur Baggs and Ray Grimm. After graduation from college, she taught grade school and married just before her husband departed to fight in World War II. It was against school policy to employ married women and she resented that she was soon asked to leave. She spent many active years supporting the Oregon Ceramic Studio and its successors (Contemporary Crafts Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Craft) and was a prolific potter. Few children visited her home without being given a lump of clay to manipulate. She was a curious person and a modernist. Never happy without a project to work on, she extended her creative powers to designing and building her house and garden, making furniture, painting, quilting and cooking exceptional sweets.
