The Land Rover Series II, produced from 1958-1961, is recognizable for its rounded, curved bodywork, a departure from the previous model's slab-sided design, and was the first to introduce the new 2.25-liter petrol engine for most models. The successor, Series IIa (1961-1971), is very similar but can be distinguished by later changes like the 2.25-liter diesel engine, optional 2.6-liter petrol engine for long-wheelbase models, and the headlamps moving to the front wings in 1969. Mechanical improvements across the Series II and IIa included wider axles for a better turning circle and servo-assisted brakes on some models.
