ABOUT THE ART
The Kavad is a special storytelling box that's like a moving temple. Crafted through the fusion of carpentry, painting, and storytelling, it is made by skilled carpenters, called the suthar, who also double up as artists, or a chitrakar, to build and decorate it.
Kavad is then used by the Kavadia Bhats, who are storytellers, who fill it with fascinating tales. These unique creations come only from Bassi, a village in the Chittorgarh District of Rajasthan.
WHAT WE LEARN
In this workshop, we learn to create the popular theme of 'Ramakrishna ki kavad', that narrate important stories from the life of Sri rama and Krushna. Alongwith, we also learn about the history, tradition and culture of the Kavad practice
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sh. Satya Narayan Suthar was born in 1972 in Bassi, Rajasthan and attended the village school. He learned the art of KAVAD making from his father, but at the age of sixteen he had to leave home and fend for himself. He worked as a craftsman for a commercial enterprise involved in exporting crafts. He has no other source of income, and depends on his artistic skills to make a living.
He, with his wife and three children and lives in a rented house. The ground floor serves as a workspace and shop. He makes Kaavads and other wooden objects for tourists and for shops in Udaipur. He has won several awards for his unique work in the art of Kaavad making. In 2004 he was given the district award, followed by a state award in 2009 and the National award for the year 2013-2014.
