Bring the charm of French coastal dining to your table with these striking mid-century oyster plates by the famed Faïencerie de Gien. Sold individually, each plate features six shell-shaped wells encircling a central sauce compartment — a classic configuration ideal for serving fresh oysters on the half shell with mignonette or lemon wedges.

Crafted in the 1940s–1950s, these beautiful plates are made of glossy faïence earthenware with a richly mottled glaze in deep olive green. The vibrant finish accentuates the sculptural detail of each shell, while the lustrous surface gives the plate a luxurious jewel toned depth. A fine example of French barbotine majolica, these pieces exemplify the timeless elegance and quality of the Gien factory.

Founded in 1821 in the Loire Valley, the Faïencerie de Gien quickly became renowned for its sophisticated decorative ceramics and contributions to French tableware traditions. Their oyster plates — both functional and highly collectible — emerged in the 19th century alongside France’s growing enthusiasm for seafood, particularly oysters from Brittany and Arcachon.

These plates are perfect for seasonal entertaining, adding a touch of French vintage flair to spring and summer gatherings. Whether used for seafood service or styled in a decorative wall display, each piece is stamped on the reverse with the Gien château hallmark, confirming authenticity and origin.
