Photographed eight years later than my first image, this 2025 aerial image shows the same court further reclaimed by its surroundings. The grid is darker now, more fractured, and the warm rust tones of dried grasses push further into the frame. What was once a pale, ordered surface has become mottled and organic, with vegetation asserting itself more confidently through every crack.

Seen alongside the 2017 image, the passage of time becomes the subject. The structure remains, but nature has shifted the balance. The court feels less paused and more surrendered — a reminder of how rural spaces evolve, quietly and without ceremony, once their original purpose fades.

Photographed by award winning photographer, Janyne Fletcher GMNZIPP, this image won a silver distinction award at the 2025 Iris Photography Awards run by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography.
