Aoife Cawley Art - St Brigid Cross Enamel PinOn the eve of St Brigids day, it is a custom in Ireland to collect rushes and weave St Brigids crosses. These crosses are left outside through the night for Brigid to bless. You are then supposed to hang these crosses in your home and they will protect your house from fire. The origin for these crosses comes from a story attributed to Brigid in which she is called to the house of a pagan chieftain who is really unwell and about to die. Some variations

On the eve of St Brigid’s day, it is a custom in Ireland to collect rushes and weave St Brigid’s crosses. These crosses are left outside through the night for Brigid to bless. You are then supposed to hang these crosses in your home and they will protect your house from fire.

The origin for these crosses comes from a story attributed to Brigid in which she is called to the house of a pagan chieftain who is really unwell and about to die. Some variations of this story actually say it was her father who was ill. Brigid went over anyways and sat with the man as he was dying. He asked her about all this Christian malarkey and she began explaining it all to him. The floor of the mans house was made out of rushes so Brigid started picking them up and weaving the cross to give a visual. He loved the story so much and asked to be baptised so Brigid sorted him out and when he died he went to heaven.

Now you can wear a St. Brigid’s cross on your jacket/lanyard/bag/etc to keep you protected all year round!

These are a new and improved version of the previous enamel pins, this time measuring 30mm.

Thought provoking - and fun too
Format: Paperback
While I'm not usually a graphic novel reader, this really grabbed me. Its seriously thought provoking, with the right mix of humor to keep it from being heavy. The illustrations amaze me - I fill in the blanks with my mind so quickly that I feel like I'm looking at the person rather than a drawing. Definitely worth reading, and hanging onto to think about again and again.

Not very impressed
Format: Kindle
I really wanted to like this book. I am very interested in gender identity issues, but after I started to read it I found myself tuning out pretty soon. Honestly, I thought it was boring. Maybe it’s the format - I’d rather talk to a real person and hear their stories!

Thought provoking and warm
Format: Paperback
I heard the author on NPR and it was such a fascinating discussion that I bought the book immediately. I live with a teen in the LGBTQ+ community, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can to support them, and others. I can't wait to let them read it now that I'm finished. The book is a wonderful representation of those across the gender spectrum, providing insight and vulnerability meant to help us all understand a little better and build up our compassion for each other.

I Am Not Alone
Format: Paperback
Three cheers for FINE: a comic about gender! Heartwarming, life-saving stories about living outside the boy/girl boxes. What a relief to see myself reflected in these pages and have tangible proof that I am not the only one. Thank you, Rhea Ewing!
